Today I learned, sadly, that I am more mature than my business law teacher.
I love Business Law. It's an interesting class and we have some interesting discussions. The teacher is both fun and good at his job, and I've got M and L in my class as well as an old coworker. Mr A throws all sorts of personal stories and real-life scenarios into the hour and it's overall an enjoyable class.
When we meandered into the computer lab today, Mr A was on the phone with a local furniture company. He and his wife had ordered a living room set from the company sometime back in November. Two of the pieces were delivered right away with the third supposed to arrive two weeks later. Fast forward two months to Monday, when the furniture company called Mrs A and said that the last piece would be in that week and delivered along with a $150 gift card as an apology. Today (Friday) the couch still hadn't been delivered so Mr A called the company.
The conversation began just before I came in. Mr A was on the phone with the manager, let's call him Red. From the sound of it Red was apologizing profusely. When Red said that the couch couldn't be delivered until Monday because the company doesn't do out-of-town trips today, Mr A started to get angry and unreasonable, making comments about stories and lies and incompetency, as well as a rather unnecessary line involving sunshine and Red's backside.
Needless to say, it was an infuriating and disappointing few moments. Yes, it's understandable that the furniture store's customer service was less than stellar and Mr A had the right to be annoyed, but that does not give him the right to be an ass. He later tried to pass the whole thing off as a learning experience for us, but I never would have acted that way towards, well, anyone. He was completely out of line and I would be embarrassed to be seen in public with him if that conversation had been face to face.
Just because a business fails to live up to your expectations doesn't mean that you can treat them like they've run over your dog. Mom does that too, and it annoys the hell out of me. You requested pickles on your hamburger and didn't get them. So the fuck what? It's not a big deal. Jesu Maria...
